Coaching Tip - A Simple Technique to Get Things Done
by Aida Ph.D.
I recently read in the book "Stress-proof your life" by Elizabeth Wilson a very simple technique to be more focused and get things done faster. At first, I thought it didn't make sense but I decided to try it because I was having a hard time finishing a couple of tasks. And I was greatly surprised. It worked wonderfully, and I finished everything pretty soon. Here it is:
Make a list of the tasks you want to accomplish. I recommend starting with three or four. Include something you really enjoy, like reading a book or magazine or listening to music. This is especially important if the tasks you need to accomplish are boring or you just don't want to do them. Once you have prioritized them, take the first one and work on it for just five minutes. Yes, just five minutes, and immediately go for the next one (even if you are suddenly inspired or you really want to finish that one). When you are done, start again with your list this time working on each item for ten minutes, and then fifteen, and so on until you finish everything.I know, I thought the same the first time I read it. But it really works! First, as we all know the hardest part of completing a task is starting, especially if it's something boring or that you just don't feel like doing. Knowing that it's only going to be for five minutes makes it very easy. And you just started...
Moreover, because you know you are going to have five minutes of your time to do something you love (that's why you put on your list reading or listening to your favorite songs), you work happily. And you will be less distracted because it's easier to be focused for shorter periods of time (everyone can do five minutes!). Outcome: you'll finish everything in less time than you expected.
Of course, I don't think this technique can be applied to everything. I can't imagine interrupting a scientific experiment after five minutes...But if you need to write an article, a grant, clean the house, pay your bills, update your Facebook status... I would definitely give it a try.
