Unsure of Your Painting? Here Are Three Wonderful Painting Techniques to Help You!
by Judith MacKay
Do you love painting but are not sure how to approach it? Don't worry. Painting is all about listening to your heart and expressing it on a canvas. But along with that, a little knowledge about the ways you can express yourself won't hurt. In this article, we have put together a few ways in which you can express yourself on paper, collectively called painting techniques.
Painting Technique #1- Blocking In
This is one of the broadest ways to start painting and is often helpful if you are not sure what you are going to paint. The full canvas is painted or worked upon at the same time. For this you have to first decide the dominant tones and colors of the painting you are making.
Then you loosely paint the required areas or so as to say "block them in". This gives way to a gradual refinement of the colors and shapes of the painting. More detail is added and the tones get finalized.
Painting Technique #2- One Section at a Time
As the name suggests, this implies having to complete painting of a particular section before you move on to the next part. This can be done in a variety of ways. You can start painting from one corner and move outwards gradually while finalizing a particular section of the canvas at a time.
While another way you can do this is to paint individual objects first followed by other items. This method is a good try if acrylics are being used and you want to blend in the colours.
Painting Technique #3- Detail first, Background Last
If you are a confident painter and are not worried about your brush control, then you should definitely try this one out. As the name suggests, this kind of painting technique enables you to put in the detail first and add the background later. The detail is gradually worked up and taken to a finished state.
Then the background is added. In fact, some painters like to complete around three quarters of the detailing before getting started with the background. These Three Painting Techniques are often used by established artists to give life to their painting.
