How to Draw - Tips You Can Use Now

by Tapan Sarkar

Learn to draw in stages: Even the most complex structure can be drawn easily if you draw in stages. Firstly break the structure into simple shapes mentally. Try to see the spheres: boxes, cylinders, spheres etc in the structure. For example, if you are drawing a man you can see the head as an oval, hand and legs are cylinders and the torso as a box.

Once you analyze the basic shapes draw them on paper. At this stage your pencil stroke should be very light on paper. After this you need to concentrate more minutely on individual shapes and add more details to them to make it like the subject you are drawing. It may sound difficult to read all these but once you get the hang of it you will be able to do it without any conscious thought on your part.

Use paper with pre-made grids: Using gridded paper gives you certain advantages. You can easily control the direction of your lines when using paper with pre-made grids, as grid gives you a reference to compare your lines with. Also controlling the shape and size of you drawing is easier when using grid paper.

Professionals use this technique: Use many quick pencil strokes working over each other to draw smooth curves instead of a single continuous line. Controlling the direction and overall smoothness of a curve is much easier if you use the former technique. Very few beginner level drawing books or courses tell readers about this simple technique, but most of the pros use this method to create their drawings.

True, it might look little messy initially: to counter this you should be using very light pencil strokes at this stage. Once you finish this stage follow the general direction of curves with more deeper pencil strokes and erase the lighter strokes. You will end up with a clean and beautifully smooth drawing.
